Clubs, Wrap-Around Care and Activities

cooking.pngIn addition to our curriculum, we offer a large selection of extra-curricular activities encompassing art, music, drama, sports of many kinds, cookery, wildlife watching, computing, sewing, science and others.

These activities are so important to the culture and ethos of the school, as they provide opportunities for all ages to experience and enjoy a wide range of pursuits.

We run many after school sports clubs; often led by a qualified outside provider. Recent clubs have included cricket, tennis, football and golf.  We are also involved in a programme of friendly after-school competition. Fixtures for football, netball, tag rugby, athletics, rounders and swimming are arranged by teachers on a regular basis and this provides opportunities for our children to meet and compete against children from other schools. We pride ourselves on the inclusive nature of how this is handled – all children are encouraged to participate, whatever their standard of performance. We teach children that team work is important and it is not just about individuals!

In addition to our after school sports provision, we also offer a wide range of other after school clubs. If run by a member of staff, parent or other member of the local community these are free to attend and generally run until 4.30 p.m. These have recently included:

Art
Ipad Club
Choir
Gardening Club
SATS Booster Club

Music and Performance

Here at Shocklach School, we pride ourselves on the quality and diversity of opportunities our pupils get to perform, whether it’s singing, as a soloist or in a choir, performing in the Christmas play, reciting poetry from memory, or playing a musical instrument.

A local company, Music for Life, provides us with peripatetic music teachers, and many of our children have weekly music lessons in piano, guitar or violin - meaning more than half of our pupils play a musical instrument! A large number go on to take musical examinations, and we have children successful in passing exams up to and including Grade 5.

We also subscribe to the ‘Wider Opportunities’ initiative, so every Year 5 and 6 pupil plays either the cello or the violin in our string orchestra, receiving two years of tuition. As this is currently subsidised by school, there is no cost to the parents. Our string orchestra is lucky enough to visit the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester ever year to play with the Hallé Orchestra!

We enjoy regular music and performance evenings, both for our school alone and also in conjunction with other schools in the local community, so that our children have regular opportunities to perform in public, helping to build the self-confidence they will need to take them all the way through primary school and beyond.
